Ask Apple Matters: Parental Controls plus SCSI to Firewire
Hi folks,
A new week brings in some new questions and, a rarity; one user has managed to answer his own question regarding SCSI to Firewire adapters. User Westcoastbob wanted to connect his Nikon LS 2000 slide and film scanner using SCSI connectors to a Firewire port on the back of his mac using a SCSI to Firewire adapter. Unfortunately it wasn’t as straight forward as first thought as his MacBook Pro refused to recognize the scanners existence. AppleMatters forum veteran Frozencold attempted to help solve the problem, but it turns out Westcoastbob refused to be beaten and found a solution himself. Well worth a read for any of you who wish to perform a similar task in the future.
Another question this week is regarding Enrico’s iMac 600 parental controls issue. He has recently handed over an iMac 600, running OS X 10.1, to his daughter only to find that there are virtually no real parental control features available. He managed to locate the ‘ratings’ section that allows you to restrict certain types of websites, based on a rating, but the power available to him isn’t enough. Check out the thread and see if you have a solution or idea you wish to share.
Question Of The Week
Question by: Westcoastbob
I have just bought a Nikon LS 2000 slide and film scanner. It has SCSI connectors and I have bought a Ratoc SCSI to Firewire adapter. My system profiler recognizes the adapter but when I run VueScan it says that no scanner is detected. VueScan works well with an old Agfa scanner I have. I have read on another forum where this worked with OS-X but as the post was from 2003 it did not use an Intel based Mac. I am using a MacBook Pro.
Any Ideas?
Cheers,
Bob

Hey Bob I’d love to attempt to help you. Maybe if we try some different software it might work. SilverFast SE will work with this scanner and it was recently updated. Click on the link below:

The problem is solved. Ratoc’s instructions are a little unclear at times and after reading them for the 4th or 5th time I realized that after configuring the various settings using the FR1 Utility you have to “Disable FR1 Utility”.!!!?? This will then require a reboot of OS-X (which took alarminingly long!). After starting VueScan the LS2000 was visible. I have now done some scans and it works.
Thanks, Frozonecold, for your offer of help. I was trying VueScan because the reviews said that it was easier to use than SilverFast.
Cheers,
Bob

Question Of The Week No. 2
Question by: Enrico
My daughter owns an Apple iMac 600 G3 running OS X 10.1.5. My concern is that I cannot find any Parental Controls in the system preferences, the only thing I did find was under “Ratings” but it still opens some rated web pages.
I will appreciate any help in this matter.
Thanks.
Enrico

Enrico,
As far as I’m aware any parental controls that do exist on 10.1, and I’m not sure there are any, are extremely limited when compared to OS X 10.4. You could try obtaining a copy of Norton Internet Security for Mac. I believe the latest version is Norton Internet Security 3 and is designed to work with OS X 10.1 to 10.3.
Click here for their official webpage. You’ll find, among other things, it includes Parental Controls that should allow you to restrict access to certain websites so your daughter can browse the Internet safely.
I hope this helps. Let me know.
