August 16, 2005: Henrico School’s Sells iBooks, Riot Ensues
The Henrico County school system decided to equip every middle school student and teacher with a laptop computer. The machine of choice was a G3 iBook.
The next time Henrico County School System had an option to resupply their students with computers they went with Dell. Suddenly, the school system had 1,000 iBooks it needed to get rid of. Apparently, the law of supply and demand is not covered until college in Henrico county because they priced the iBooks at an absurdly low $50 each.
The public, knowing a good value when they saw it, descended on the site of the sale. Unfortunately. that was the high point of the sale. Once the doors opened, people began using any means necessary to get a $50 iBook. The result was a stampede and several injuries. The riot for iBooks occurred on August 16, 2005.

Okay now if you can see me I am the guy buy the gate with the baseball bat.
Besides I think Apple won the socond bid not dell. http://www.macnn.com/articles/06/02/10/henrico.ibook.contract/
Apple was beat by Dell, at least for most of the counties business.

Well according to the article I pointed out Apple renewed their contract.
I see what you’re saying, somehow Apple managed to keep the middle school business but lost the big prize. I wonder why the middle schools stuck with Apple?
The answer is simple, middle school students would not be able to cope with a change from easy to use Macs to difficult Pcs. That and Macs are easier to learn from the start.
It will be interesting to see what the total cost of ownership ends up being. Our neighbor is experiencing the Dell transition and hates it. Apparently they are always breaking down and they’ve got some primitive OS called Windows or something installed which requires a lot more tech support. I guess they’ll eventually be selling those for a buck now that they’ve set the resale price precedent. That would be a riot!
