February 12, 1993: Steve Goes All Intel the First Time

by Chris Seibold Feb 12, 2011

Steve Jobs, it is widely known, is fascinated by industrial design. This passion means Steve loves producing computer hardware. Yet for all his love of design, Steve can manage to be a realist when serious cash, particularly his, is on the line.

The hardware in question at this point was made by NeXT Computers. The magnesium clad computers received great reviews but they were moving out of the storehouse at a pace glaciers would deem pokey and were a major drain on Steve's NeXT venture. Rather than put up with the constant greenback sucking hardware Steve decided NeXT would go all software.

To accomplish this Steve laid off a bunch of NeXT hardware types, sold the manufacturing business to Canon and announced that NeXT would focus on software…for x86 machines only this month in 1993.
