January 21, 2002: Lampshade iMac Released
The original iMac was a monster hit, but so was the Model T. After the iMac’s initial popularity began to ebb, Apple saw the need to completely revise the machine. In true Apple style the revisions weren't simply incremental improvements or a new processor.
The first complete redesign of the iMac got rid of the G3 processor for the Altivec enabled G4, added CD burning across the line and sported a 15" flat panel monitor and a white keyboard, an impressive update on specs alone.
The most striking thing about the new Mac wasn't necessarily the flat screen but the new form factor. Instead of a traditional all-in-one feeling, the iMac had more of a disjointed all-in-one form factor, with the monitor separated from the hemispherical base by an easily adjustable chrome arm. Steve Jobs said a sunflower inspired the design. All this could be yours in January of 2002 for the princely sum of $1499.
