March 30, 1988: If You Can’t Compete…Sue

As soon as Microsoft got a look at Apple's GUI operating system they started working on their own version. The initial version of Windows was fairly horrible and widely disdained but later versions proved more popular. Apple began realizing they were losing the GUI OS war and decided to do something about it. The something wasn't a new innovation or price cuts, the something was litigation.

Apple wanted to be compensated for Windows 2.3, which was much better than the initial release of Windows. They also wanted to be compensated for the Hewlett Packard New Wave OS that HP licensed, to add insult to injury, from Microsoft.

Eventually, Apple would end up asking compensation to the tune of 5.5 billion. In any event , Apple decided to try and outlitigate instead of out-innovate the competition in March of 1988.

  • Horror of horrors, I agree with MacGlee.  To Apple’s credit, they didn’t stop improving the Mac just because they were on the losing side of the OS war. 

    At least not until OS 9, which sucked ginormous donkey-ass and was terribly inferior to its contemporary, Windows 2000.
