September 30, 2002: No More iTools (Suckers!)
The incentive to upgrade from OS 8 to OS 9 for the average consumer was questionable. Apple decided to sweeten the deal by offering a variety of internet-based services for free with the purchase of OS 9.
The service was called iTools and gave users a .mac e-mail address, a few programs and a little bit of web space. People loved it. Apple, on the other hand, was not as fond of iTools as their customers were. Citing the cost of iTools, Apple cancelled the program, and instead, offered users the chance to pay Apple the low introductory price of $49.95 to get web-based Mac hipness.
The last day people could use iTools for free was September 30, 2002.
