September 6, 1984: Mac 512 Introduced

by Chris Seibold Sep 06, 2010

The original Mac was so under-powered that when it came time for Apple to demo its Mac, the company had to improve its prototype to create a functional example of what a Mac could do. One of the most glaring shortcomings in the original Mac was the amount of memory; 128 KB just wasn't sufficient.

To remedy the situation, Apple introduced the Mac 512. The 512 retained the original form factor of the first Mac but bumped the memory up to (unsurprisingly) 512 KB. The addition was most welcome, as the increased RAM let the machine copy floppies faster, run more complex software and make the entire early-Mac experience much better.

Mac Users got the first chance to get a useful Mac this week in 1984.
