Of course, it is possible that he wiped out his OS X partition, but what makes you say so confidently that is what must have happened? Is it possible that his Mac OS X volume is no longer blessed because he chose to boot off of the Windows CD? In other words, he just needs to tell it that he wants to boot from OS X this time? In that case, he should at least TRY holding down Option when he restarts until the boot choice screen shows up. If there is no Mac OS X volume, then you're probably right. If there IS a Mac OS X volume, he should pick it to see if it works before spending hours rebuilding Mac OS X.
Oh, for heaven's sake!
First, the article clearly says that he installed Windows on a partition and forgot the CD key - where in the world do you get information that makes you think he wiped out his OS X partition?
Second, the author of the article (or the reader) could have simply searched for "startup key" (on Google the 2nd link is what you want) to find out what the startup key is to pick a startup disk. For those who'd rather read it here than on one of the several hundreds other sites that say: it's Option (not the C key - that's to boot of of a CD).
Asking readers answers to opinion questions or difficult questions I can see, but this was a little silly.
Quicksilver (http://www.blacktree.com) does so much it's hard to describe. Please go read more about it - I can't do it justice. And remember that it has built-in functions as well as plugins that certainly do more than add "more eye-candy."
TextWrangler is the (recently) free version of BBEdit - if you are not a programmer or need amazing text power tools, TextWrangler will do the trick. It even has RegEx, and if you don't even know what RegEx is you don't need BBEdit itself.

An application to store your writing, research, notes, to-dos, and much more? DevonThink Personal Edition (probably most won't need Pro, unless they do serious research projects and need to separate them out completely). It allows wiki-style links between files, does amazing auto-categorization and much more.

As noted by others, you may wan to go through the whole article and correct your abbreviations: You seem to always used a lower-case "b" for both gigabyte, gigabit, and megabyte values. For example, the "64Mb" is probably supposed to be 64 MegaBytes, which would be upper-case "B" as in "MB."
Many people don't know the difference. you, as the author, should get it right so they learn.
ResqAndy:
The first version of OS X was had a much slower interface response than OS 9. Every version of OS X since then has actually _improved_ speed in almost every area. 10.3 runs better on old iMacs than 10.2 did, and that was better than 10.1, which was faster than 10.0.
Keep that in mind - your example was of an essentially beta product, unlike the really usable 10.1+.
Does "Minimal Needs" include not having your identity stolen, your private files wiped out by viruses, and being able browse the web without being constantly harassed by pop-ups?
If so, you'll have to throw in a bunch of money for virus-blocking software that doesn't, tech support from your local store that isn't, and much agony and frustration when your digital camera photo storage is wiped out by a virus.
If you have minimal needs, there's a good chance you don't have the expertise required to use a computer NOT running Mac OS X. If all you need to do is read email, browse the web, and store digital photos - GET A MAC! Maybe you'll find those experiences enjoyable enough you'll find the time and interest to find out what else you can do.
"The masses are like children and are led like sheep with lies, myths and false promises."
Sometimes seems true, but I think we still have enough people who pay attention to overcome those. Hope so, at least.
Well, as far as using Apple-only products:
1. I use an SMC Barricade rather than Apple's Airport since I wanted its configurability.
2. I use Eudora rather than Apple's Mail, since it has many un-replicated options.
3. I use OmniWeb instead of Safari, since it has a LOT more features than Safari.
4. I stopped using .Mac when they asked for money. If I'm going to pay for a hosting account, it'd better have SSH, MySQL, etc. .Mac is much to limited for me.
5. I use Smile to program in AppleScript, since Script Editor has annoying limitations.
Oh, and for Steve: I disagree with a lot of Bush's positions. For example, letting our southern border be a sieve, expanding socialized healthcare (let's see if we can do to all healthcare what we did to flu vaccine supplies), and expanding the federal government in general. Problem is, I think Kerry will get all those wrong and a lot more. That's not blind loyalty, its knowing who you really oppose, and knowing who you generally agree with on important issues. I suppose I could pretend to be one of those reasonable "undecideds" that are so fashionable, but I don't think anyone who is still undecided in the US election choices has a brain. :-)
Um, Zell Miller is a Democrat who feels his party left him by moving to the extreme and punishing anyone who disagrees with the party line.
Two pro-choice Republicans spoke at the RNC, while the D's focus on ignoring moderates like Joe Lieberman who don't tow the party line. He even had to move left to get the nod as Al Gore's VP in 2000.
Evidence: comparing product loyalty based on a pattern of high-quality products to a militant cult that believes in wiping out through suicide attacks anyone who disagrees with them.
THAT, my friend, is a twisted world-view.
Steve,
You obviously have some difficulty with perspective and the scope of things. Apple fomenting a little "love this product" attitude is hardly comparable to Islamic militants killing themselves just to kill "the infidels."
Time to work on a twisted world-view, guy, rather than pick on people for loyalty to a good product.
If you call Americans terrorists for ending World War II, I'm going to make a wild guess that you'd be voting Dennis Kucinich if you voted your ideals. If you are voting by who is closer to believing America is the enemy, vote for Kerry. He's had America-hating Michael Moore as an honored guest.
